Conditions at Tamms Supermax prison violate international standards for the humane treatment of prisoners and have been defined as torture by the UN Human Rights Committee and Committee against Torture. This includes the use of indefinite solitary confinement in conditions of virtual sensory deprivation, for years at a time, as well as inadequate treatment of mental health issues that arise from or are exacerbated by these conditions. Men leave their cells only a few hours each week for solitary exercise.
For budgetary reasons, Governor Quinn has proposed closing Tamms. Please tell IL lawmakers that you back the Governor’s proposal.
